    Reviewer:Raj Tummala, MD (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals)
Description:This is the second edition of a very thorough and comprehensive review for examinees preparing for the psychiatry board examination. The book, which covers the curriculum requirements of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, was last published in 2000.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide those preparing for the psychiatry board examinations with a comprehensive review book that covers the entire curriculum. The second edition has new information on psychopharmacological advances as well as updates on child psychiatry. This book can also serve as a refresher for practitioners who just want to update themselves.
Audience:The target audience is any clinician preparing for board certification and recertification examinations. Practitioners as well as students will find this book a great resource of information.
Features:The second edition is divided into five sections that cover everything from test taking strategies to diagnosis, neurologic disorders, treatment approaches and special topics. Authorities write each chapter. The first section does a very good job of helping the examinee understand the structure of the examination as well as present useful test taking strategies. Each chapter is written in a concise manner with information presented in point format. Important information for the board examination is highlighted. The book also employs tables for presenting pertinent information. Each psychiatric disorder has the diagnostic criteria with epidemiology, differential diagnosis, and treatment. A reference section ends each chapter an there is aquestion and answer section that can be used as examination preparation. The book does a wonderful job of covering the topics in psychiatry in a concise but detailed manner. The only shortcoming is the lack of detail on the neurologic disorders, an area that seems to get greater emphasis.
Assessment:This is a useful and easy to read update that clinicians can use in daily practice or for board examination preparation. Of the multitude of review books in the market, I rate this one the highest.
