Synopsis

Gaining access to personal letters, albums and scrapbooks, plus spending hours with family members among some 300 interviews, has allowed the authors to craft the definitive biography of one of the most remarkable basketball stories in history. They reveal new facts and provide startling insight into Pistol Pete Maravich, who lived a life of triumph and tragedy before finding happiness in religion in the years before his death at age 40.

ESPN

The definitive biography of Pistol Pete Maravich.

August 30, 2007: I may have been born in 1984, three short years before Pete's untimely death but I would say that I have a pretty strong knowledge of Pete Maravich. I wasn't named Pistol Pete's biggest fan by Fox Sports for nothing. The funny thing is that contest was promoting 'the other' new Maravich that has come out, which is so far below the standard this book has set. MARAVICH has been able to give me NEW knowledge on Pete Maravich, something the 'other' book has failed to do. Pete Maravich is my idol and I understand that he had many personal battles through out his life, but I like my biographies on the positive side and MARAVICH, yet again unlike the 'other' book, has been bale to do that. This is THE recommended read by THE ULTIMATE Maravich fan!

February 12, 2007: I first heard of this book from ESPN's Bill Simmons. Then there was a nice review in the New York Times. They both emphasized the exceptional research and detail. That's how I like my biographies so the the bar was set pretty high.... and MARAVICH exceeded it. Easily. I've never seen any basketball so beautifully detailed (they even have individual game stats). They layout is powerfully simple - one chapter for each basketball season. Then they add texture and context by interviewing hundreds of people who knew Pete - including Pete's widow, Jackie, and his two sons. Then they scoured what seems like thousands of newspapers, etc. Here's just ONE quote from writer Skip Bayless after watching Pete play for LSU in 1968. 'Pete knew more about basketball than anyone in the world. He had discovered another dimension.... I thought I saw God.' I won't bring the divinity into this review - but MARAVICH has opened a new dimension in the sports biography. Thrilling, informative, dense, and completely satisfying. Thanks.
