This is the second edition of a self-paced manual of IV therapy. It is divided into three units. Unit one introduces the learner to the history of intravenous therapy, past, present and future. Legal responsibilities, risk management, quality patient management, and competency criteria are also included. Unit two is composed of eight chapters encompassing the basics of IV practice, with chapters on fluid and electrolyte balance, types and indications for specific parenteral solutions, infection control, equipment needed, techniques, complications, and special needs of the geriatric and pediatric patient. The five chapters in unit three deal with specific content related to central line management, administration of medications, transfusion therapy, nutritional support, and antineoplastic therapy. This manual is designed to provide a workbook, text, and pocket guide for the safe administration of intravenous therapy. It is intended for the student and novice nurse in all settings where IV therapy skills are necessary and as a resource manual for the expert practitioner. In units two and three, each chapter has objectives, a defined glossary of terms, a pre-test and a post-test. In addition, worksheets, competency criteria, suggestions for evaluation of competency and critical thinking activities are included. Nursing process is presented in a table format at the end of each chapter, with emphasis on assessment and interventions. Home care and patient education has been added to this edition. The appendixes include reference charts for physical and chemical compatibility, normal laboratory values, and guidelines for controlling occupational exposure to hazardous drugs and dilutionrates for IV drugs. This is an easy to use, up-to-date and very readable guide on IV therapeutics. Information proceeds from simple to complex and is presented at an appropriate level to satisfy diverse backgrounds.. The theory is incorporated into clinical application. Illustrations, charts, tables, and study aids are well done and informative. The pre-tests and post-tests are excellent for identifying areas needing further review.
