Synopsis

The second edition of Management of the Mechanically Ventilated Patient functions as both an educational manual and a clinical reference for those involved in monitoring, managing, and delivering care to patients requiring respiratory intervention or mechanical ventilatory support. The range of coverage and practical approach in this easy to understand guide provides the nurse and other health care professional the clinical practice information needed to deliver safe and effective respiratory care.

  • Contains cutting-edge coverage of respiratory care to keep nurses and other health care professionals up to date
  • Includes valuable information on airways, oxygen delivery devices; lung expansion, bronchial hygiene and aerosol therapies
  • Rich in illustrations, boxes and tables to support understanding of information
  • Fundamental and advanced, but practical, information about mechanical ventilation from patient selection and application, to monitoring, troubleshooting, and weaning including basic and complex modes
  • Specialized techniques such as independent lung ventilation and high frequency oscillatory ventilation
  • Comprehensive appendices provide practical and current information including the latest on drugs

  • Covers the newest airways on the market such as tubes that provide for suctioning of secretions above the cuff, thereby potentially reducing the incidence of nosocomial pneumonia
  • Contains current research on the use of positioning to enhance lung volume, oxygenation, and secretion clearance
  • Revised headings and subheadings to ensure the reader can readily locate topics of interest
  • Content markedly expanded on noninvasiveventilation or ventilation without an endotracheal tube, lung recruitment maneuvers, lung protective ventilatory strategies, and prevention of complications of mechanical ventilation such as pneumonia and ventilator induced lung injury
  • Expanded mechanical ventilation content to include advanced modes, dual control modes and the latest research findings on uses and application of PEEP
  • New chapter on ventilator graphics and waveform analysis opens up a new area of monitoring for practitioners
  • Substantial revision of content on weaning from mechanical ventilation includes comprehensive weaning assessment tools and multidisciplinary protocols
  • All figures are updated to ensure current products and manufacturers
  • Appendix on Ventilator Withdrawal at End-of-Life including ethical issues and procedural steps
  • Specialized techniques such as heliox, inhaled nitric oxide, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation including rationale for therapy and information for establishing standards of care

Reviewer:Julie A. Stanik-Hutt, PhD, ACNP, CCNS (Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)
Description:This is a comprehensive book on the management of patients receiving mechanical ventilation. This is a revised edition of a 1995 book titled Guide to Mechanical Ventilation and Intensive Respiratory Care.
Purpose:This is intended as an educational manual and clinical reference on the care of individuals requiring ventilatory support. It easily meets this objective. It is an invaluable tool for any healthcare student or bedside practitioner providing care to individuals with pulmonary problems. It should be part of the library of any advanced practice nurse who practices in acute and critical care.
Audience:The book is written at a level appropriate for healthcare students, registered nurses, and nurses preparing for advanced practice roles (CNS, ACNP, CRNA) in progressive and critical care. The editor, a clinical nurse specialist with more than 15 years of practice experience in the care of individuals receiving respiratory support, has shared her expertise with thousands of nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers through classes and publications. She has also participated in research to improve the care of these critically ill patients.
Features:The text flows logically, beginning with anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, and basic respiratory therapies, followed by more advanced, invasive, and unusual supportive measures. Care of the patient as well as prevention, recognition, and management of complications are included with discussions of each therapy. This providescomprehensive but pragmatic information required to provide safe patient care. Unique appendixes which are particularly helpful are the Pulmonary Symbols and Abbreviations and Removal of Mechanical Ventilation at the End of Life.
Assessment:This updated version is well worth the price and would be valuable to any critical care professional. It is also an appropriate text for a critical care course or for certification preparation. It compares favorably to Burns's AACN Protocols for Practice: Care of Mechanically Ventilated Patients, 2nd edition (Jones and Bartlett, 2007) , which is an evidence-based manual of care protocols. The Burns text integrates content, whereas this book provides individual chapters on each topic. This book also includes content on anatomy, physiology, patient assessment, and non-ventilator respiratory therapies, topics not covered in Burns. These differences, along with the well marked illustrations, diagrams, and tables (also not found in Burns) , make this book a better choice for the novice provider who wants to learn about managing patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
