Purpose:This is intended as an educational manual and clinical reference on the care of individuals requiring ventilatory support. It easily meets this objective. It is an invaluable tool for any healthcare student or bedside practitioner providing care to individuals with pulmonary problems. It should be part of the library of any advanced practice nurse who practices in acute and critical care.
Audience:The book is written at a level appropriate for healthcare students, registered nurses, and nurses preparing for advanced practice roles (CNS, ACNP, CRNA) in progressive and critical care. The editor, a clinical nurse specialist with more than 15 years of practice experience in the care of individuals receiving respiratory support, has shared her expertise with thousands of nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers through classes and publications. She has also participated in research to improve the care of these critically ill patients.

The Burns text integrates content, whereas this book provides individual chapters on each topic. This book also includes content on anatomy, physiology, patient assessment, and non-ventilator respiratory therapies, topics not covered in Burns. These differences, along with the well marked illustrations, diagrams, and tables (also not found in Burns) , make this book a better choice for the novice provider who wants to learn about managing patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
