Synopsis

His trainer said that managing him was like holding a tiger by the tail. His owner compared him to “chain lightning.” His jockeys found their lives transformed by him, in triumphant and distressing ways. All of them became caught in a battle for honesty.
Born in 1917, Man o’ War grew from a rebellious youngster into perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time. He set such astonishing speed records that The New York Times called him a “Speed Miracle.” Often he won with so much energy in reserve that experts wondered how much faster he could have gone. Over the years, this and other mysteries would envelop the great Man o’ War.
The truth remained problematic. Even as Man o’ War---known as “Big Red”---came to power, attracting record crowds and rave publicity, the colorful sport of Thoroughbred racing struggled for integrity. His lone defeat, suffered a few weeks before gamblers fixed the 1919 World Series, spawned lasting rumors that he, too, had been the victim of a fix.
Tackling old beliefs with newly uncovered evidence, Man o’ War: A Legend Like Lightning shows how human pressures collided with a natural phenomenon and brings new life to an American icon. The genuine courage of Man o’ War, tribulations of his archrival, Sir Barton (America’s first Triple Crown winner), and temptations of their Hall of Fame jockeys and trainers reveal a long-hidden tale of grace, disgrace, and elusive redemption.

Library Journal

In an interview, author Laura Hillenbrand (Seabiscuit: An American Legend) was asked if she planned to write on the Man O' War (1917-47), arguably the greatest American racehorse ever. She replied that "a wonderful writer named Dorothy Ours" had beaten her to "the first truly comprehensive biography of Man O' War. So I'll have to look elsewhere!" What better endorsement for Ours (former communications coordinator, National Museum of Racing & Hall of Fame), who spent a decade researching this book. Though others have written biographies of this great racehorse, including Page Cooper and Roger L. Treat, and Edward L. Bowen, Ours used several more resources than previous authors-one primary source she cites is the daughter-in-law of Man O' War jockey Johnny Loftus. Ours documents how Man O' War's success changed the lives of those around him both for better and for worse. She also includes little-known tidbits, such as the fact that drugging horses for optimal performance was legal during this time, though Man O' War was such a phenomenal horse that he did not require it. Although perhaps lacking the crossover appeal of Seabiscuit, this book is recommended for all libraries with racing collections.-Patsy Gray, Huntsville P.L., AL Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

August 04, 2007: This comprehensive book is a must-have for Man o' War fans. It's loaded with facts, statistics, the biography of every person close to the magnificent horse, and it brings to light many of the usually glossed-over controversies surrounding Man o' War's 'Upset' race as well as those of the racing world at that time. While this volume isn't as emotionally gripping as Laura Hillenbrand's 'Seabiscuit', there are tender moments and moments of sheer excitement. Dorothy Ours brings Man o' War's races vividly to life. It is a masterfully done work on the greatest racehorse to ever live.

April 10, 2007: I really found the details interesting to the story. Virtually EVERYONE knows the superficial history of Man o'War...20 wins of 21 starts...Upset beat him... yawn ! Dorothy has woven in many facts about characters other than the mighty Big Red that provide corrections to previous undocumented accounts and gave me more to his story than I have ever read before. Although the book does not chronicle humans falling madly in love and riding off on Big Red into the sunset to live happily ever after, I felt the anxiety of the crowds at the races and the dilemmas of his owners and riders throughout the book. Well done!
