    Synopsis

#1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jackson delivers a gripping, edge-of-your-seat tale of deception and betrayal as New Orleans detective Rick Bentz is forced to confront the ghosts of his past—and a killer's twisted vengeance...

The scent is unmistakable—gardenias, sweet and delicate, the same perfume that his beautiful first wife, Jennifer, always wore. Opening his eyes in the hospital room where he's recovering from an accident, New Orleans detective Rick Bentz sees her standing in the doorway. Then Jennifer blows him a kiss and disappears. But it couldn't have been Jennifer. She died twelve years ago...

Once out of the hospital, Bentz begins to see Jennifer everywhere, haunting and taunting him, then vanishing without a trace. Could she still be alive? But it was Bentz who identified Jennifer's body after her horrible car wreck, and there had been no question in his mind that it was her crumpled form behind the wheel, her clothes, her wedding ring. He's never doubted it—until now. He can't tell his new wife, Olivia, about the sightings or his secret fear that he's losing his mind, even though he knows she suspects something is wrong. But Olivia is also hiding a secret...

When a copy of Jennifer's death certificate arrives in the mail, emblazoned with a redquestion mark, Bentz follows the postmark trail to Los Angeles, returning to the painful memories he's tried so hard to forget, and straight into a killer's web. Reconnecting with his former LAPD colleagues, Bentz begins to piece together Jennifer's last days, but each new discovery only serves as a chilling reminder of how little he really knew about his first wife. Then themurdersbegin, each victim a part of Jennifer's past, each grisly corpse pointing to Bentz as the prime suspect.

Someone's been waiting patiently, silently. Someone who knows exactly what happened that night twelve years ago and has been anticipating Bentz's every move. Soon it will be Bentz's turn to suffer for his sins. But he won't be the only one made to pay the ultimate price. For a diabolical killer has now made Olivia the prime target...

    Annotation

    Dear Reader,

I thought you might like a little bit of history on MALICE, my latest hardcover thriller from Kensington Publishing. MALICE is the culmination of a series that started with Detectives Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya in New Orleans in HOT BLOODED. The characters became so popular and I had so many stories to tell that the series grew to include COLD BLOODED, THE NIGHT BEFORE, SHIVER, ABSOLUTE FEAR and most recently LOST SOULS.

At the end of LOST SOULS, Rick Bentz, who is gravely injured and whose marriage to Olivia is strained, wakes up from a coma and thinks he sees the ghost of his dead ex-wife, Jennifer, standing in his hospital room. Needless to say, he's beyond freaked out. He's certain he buried Jennifer twelve years ago. He even identified her body and found her suicide note. But the woman he sees looks so much like Jennifer, he thinks she's either a ghost or a dead ringer for his conniving, but sexy ex-wife. Bentz is compelled to return to L.A. to find out for himself if it truly is his ex-wife's body in the grave, or inexplicably, is Jennifer really still alive? If so, some one is truly luring him to Southern California to solve the mystery of Jennifer's "accident". Someone deadly.

I've always loved writing about Bentz and Montoya. And I adore good ghost stories. So this blending of the two was right up my alley. I think you'll like it!

Now that MALICE is done, I'm putting the final touches on my next original paperback, CHOSEN TO DIE, which will be out in August 2009. CHOSEN TO DIE is the second in this series set in the BitterrootMountains of Montana, the sequel to LEFT TO DIE. It takes up right where LEFT TO DIE left off, and includes all of the characters introduced in the first story including female detectives Regan Pescoli and Selena Alvarez, so look for it in August.

    Meanwhile, enjoy MALICE!

    Publishers Weekly

A vengeful ex-wife appears to have returned from the dead to stalk her ex-husband in this gripping thriller from bestseller Jackson (Absolute Fear). Former LAPD detective Rick Bentz has rebuilt his life with a happy marriage and new career with the New Orleans police 12 years after divorcing his unfaithful first wife, Jennifer, who subsequently died in a car crash. After "a freak accident in a lightning storm" that left his temporarily paralyzed, Rick starts seeing Jennifer's ghost. When Rick receives an anonymous package mailed from Culver City, Calif., containing recent photos of a woman resembling Jennifer, he goes to California to investigate. In L.A., the Twenty-one killer, who strangles identical twins on their 21st birthday, resurfaces. Rick's last unsolved L.A. case involved victims of this serial killer. Jackson heightens the creep factor by including the viewpoint of a character whose hatred for Rick for past wrongs inspires another extreme killing spree. (Apr.)

September 02, 2009: I truly enjoyed the continuation of the details of Rick Bentz's life. Going back to answer unanswered questions from earlier novels is an aspect I thoroughly enjoy, and Lisa Jackson tied up loose ends quite well. I hope she publishes more!

August 28, 2009: I waited eagerly for Malice to hit the shelves and I wasn't disappointed. It was un-put-downable. Full credit to Lisa Jackson for writing so eloquently of Bentz's frustration (I know he's not real, but his persistence in the face of enmity was particularly well done!).

Lisa Jackson's books are very well plotted and her characterisation is exceptional (hence my complete addiction to the New Orleans crew). My measure of a good book is one where time becomes a concept and not some strident intrusion into my pleasure. Malice made me forget everything else and had me glued to every word.

Well done Lisa Jackson, but don't waste time sitting on your laurels.
