The Washington Post - Maureen Corrigan

Mad Dogs, which was written by veteran reporter and novelist James Grady (of Six Days of the Condor fame) is much more inventive, hectic and, at times, moving than that synopsis would suggest. The five patients in the Day Room that fateful day are ex-CIA agents, housed at a secret mental hospital in Maine because their tethers to sanity have snapped in courageous service to their country. Their hapless psychiatrist, Leon Friedman, is murdered after the session concludes, when he's sitting alone going over notes. One of the patients returns to the Day Room and finds the skewered shrink, whose brain has been professionally punctured (via his right ear) with a sharp object.

December 27, 2006: James Grady?s Mad Dogs are five veterans or victims of America?s war on terrorism, unsung heroes of the CIA or other covert agencies. The five gave their all in the belief that what they did had to matter, and in order to make it matter, they had to make great sacrifices, one of the greatest, their sanity. In a masterful blending of past and present, Grady delineates the Mad Dogs? history and character, that which created their present realities. The precipitating incident is the murder of a visiting therapist, Dr. Leon Friedman, who made more progress with the five in fourteen days than their regular psychiatrist had in years by capturing their respect. Realizing that they would be blamed for his death, the five stage a ?jail break? to find the real puppet master, for Nurse Death who physically killed the doctor was merely the master?s puppet, a tool. Thus John, the most recent inmate and leader, Russell, Zane, Eric, and Hailey escape from Ravens Castle, their sanctum and prison in Maine with the help of the Condor, another legendary spy, and begin their odyssey to escape their pursuers and seek the murderer in Washington D.C. And though their odyssey is a fine one, with subterfuge and adventure, shoot-outs and martial arts fights, there is a deep sadness that runs through the book. Were the personal horrors they suffered ?worth it?? They themselves could not face what they had to do to learn what they did, and then, what happened to the truth they learned for themselves and their country? Were they heeded? John?s information was lost in translation and 9/11 was allowed to occur. Certainly his sacrifice wasn?t ?worth it.? In the end, who is truly insane? The spy master who had to murder the ?spotter? before he could be spotted as insane? Of course, but aren?t the other five insane? At the end of this thrill ride, John knows what he wants to do, but we don't. Mr. Grady, when is your next book going to be published?

June 06, 2006: This pure adventure novel grabs you from the minute you pick it up and won't let you sleep until you finish it. Five flawed and somewhat mad spies are in a secret asylum for high risk and embarrassing(to the government) spies who lost their sanity while serving their country. Their psychiatrist is murdered inside the facility and they know they will be blamed for it. They break out and work against time to find the real mastermind behind the killing. Each of them is partly insane and without their medicines they will soon perhaps be unable to funtion. The race against time carries them to Washington, with dead ends and danger always to be encountered. The finale will surprise you when you find out who the real villain is. On the way to the real answer and the real culprit we are entertained by a master thriller writer. James Grady has written 13 previous books, including two Condor novels. He has outdone himself again. There is even a cameo appearance by Condor himself, but you'll have to read the book to see this. Buy the book, but don't start reading it at night.
