September 22, 2008: I just finished reading 'Lottery' last night--finished with tears in my eyes. So I simply had to share how much I enjoyed it, how impressed I was the writing, and how much I look forward to reading more novels by Patricia Wood in the future. I read at minimum 100 pages a day of fiction. Nowadays, it's mostly escapist fluff'. Nowadays I only go for 'literary fiction' when I start to feel my mind starving for something more substantial than brain candy. But 'Lottery' fills the bill on ALL accounts. It is so beautifully written--dare I say 'lyrical'--even though it uses very simple 1st person language. And the story itself is gripping--it sucks you in immediately. And the characters... Well, Perry is going to stay with me for a long, long time. Though the reader roots for Perry all along, and knows he'll prevail in the end, the manner in which he does is both surprising and touching. A GOOD READ THAT ALSO REMINDS ONE OF WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT IN LIFE.
