New York Times, August 2006
"...offers days of browsing pleasure."
Lonely Planet excels with this intimate sampling of the world's 200 "top cities" from a very personal perspective. The selection was made from a survey taken by Lonely Planet staff, authors, and travelers worldwide, and the result is an insightful look at the exceptional diversity and special characteristics of each location. As expected, Paris (number one!), New York, and London are among the top choices, but the reader is also introduced to such surprising selections as Bamako (Mali), Chiang Mai (Thailand), and Nuuk (Greenland). Lonely Planet's eclectic approach captures the distinctness of each locale to enlighten and captivate the reader. The general statistics are brief, but the content expands on the lifestyles of each city's people: what topics they discuss regularly and how they live. Representative experiences of each city are suggested, and each profile includes an Urban Myth snapshot for some extra descriptive flavor. This more personalized travelers' selection of intriguing cities, following The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country of the World, is highly visual and very much a collector's item. Informative, entertaining, and fun for everyone; highly recommended.-Jo-Anne Mary Benson, Osgoode, Ont. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
