December 20, 2003: Behind the walls of the George W. Bigg home live the Littles, a family whose tallest member measures six inches. Like the Borrowers (a favorite with me in childhood), the Littles get their living by appropriating whatever they need from the giants whose home their share. They earn their keep, though, by keeping the house's plumbing, electrical system, and so on in top operating condition. All is well until the Biggs go on an extended vacation, and rent their home to the Newcombs. The renters are terrible housekeepers. Soon, to the Littles' horror, the house is invaded by predators. Mice! Which from their viewpoint are enormous and dangerous beasts, as Granny and Uncle Pete have cause to remember from a similar invasion long ago. There's one thing worse than mice that the Newcombs could bring into the house. A cat to kill them. Which is, of course, exactly what the Newcombs do next.... Delightful! An exciting story that has plenty of action without being overly frightening. I look forward to reading this one to my small nephew.
