November 02, 2009: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is funny, dramatic, and intriguing. Percy, the main character, is enthusiastic and displays all the attributes of a teenage character. This book is funny, insightful and laden with personality. Percy is mischievous and the kind of student teachers tend to like to avoid. He has dyslexia and ADHD and has never gotten higher than an C- on his report card, but for Percy things are about to change. It all starts near the end of school. His school is taking a trip to a museum. Unfortunately, his hopes are dashed! His math teacher, who has always hated him, tries to kill Percy by turning into a bat-like creature. Strangely enough, when he destroys her using a pen that turns into a sword that his history teacher tossed him, she dissolves into a pile of dust. That is when things start to get confusing for Percy! No matter who he asks none of his class mates remember Mrs. Dodds. not even his scrawny best friend Grover. Then Grover start talking to Percy`s latin teacher about great danger for Percy. After some old ladies cut some string with giant gold scissors outside a bus Grover goes crazy! Soon Percy finds himself the coast of long island on vacation with his mother. During the night they hear strange knocking noises. They go to the door and in trots an anxious Grover with the furry hind quarters of a goat. Percy has found himself in the middle of a greek myth! All the myths are true! Percy realizes that his father--the one his mother never married--must be a god. And, if so, he is a half-blood or a demigod[as Grover called them.] Now they have Hades on their tail with some of the most treacherous monsters of the underworld. Will Percy get to Camp Half blood? [ a refuge with magical boundaries for most half bloods to go to stay away from monsters attempting to track them down.] Will he be the special one in the prophecy, the one who will save Olympus?

This book is perfect for snuggling up on snowy evenings with hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fire, to enjoy the adventures and epic tales of characters who are brought to life as you read. You will enjoy this book, full of personality and hilarious happenings. I am sure you will know most of the myths that Rick Riordan puts a twist to. He bases most of his writing on greek mythology which he definitely incorporates into the humor of the book. Percy goes on an Odyssey of his own! Will he come back?
