Synopsis

Oprah credits trial consultant and behavioral scientist Phillip McGraw with helping her win the Amarillo beef trial. His secret? Helping people take responsibility for their own life path through understanding the reality of why people behave the way they do. In his new book, Life Strategies, McGraw pinpoints the ten Life Laws — from "Life rewards action" to "People do what works" — that can help us pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, banish self-pity, and finally achieve success and fulfillment in business, in love, and in life.

Annotation

Straight from Oprah Winfrey's "Change Your Life TV" team comes the sage advice of Phillip McGraw, Ph.D. In Life Strategies: Doing What Works, Doing What Matters, Dr. McGraw presents the "Immutable Laws of Life" and uses them to create techniques that will help you get through life's touch spots.

Library Journal

President of a litigation consulting firm, McGraw is also a member of Oprah Winfrey's "Change Your Life TV" team. He advised Oprah during her Amarillo beef trial and attributes the inspiration for this book to that episode. McGraw claims that people in dire situations have serious problems, including denial and choosing initial assumptions without testing them for accuracy. To create a life strategy that works, McGraw lays out his ten "Life Laws" along with checklists and 18 assignments. Each chapter begins with one of the life laws: e.g., get real; you create your own experience; people do what works; and life is managed, not cured. He concludes with a wrap-up of a seven-step strategy, working toward set goals. This is similar in content to Zig Ziglar's Success for Dummies. Oprah's name may increase demand; buy as needed for self-help collections.--Lisa S. Wise, Broome Cty. P.L., Binghamton, NY

Biography

Though he first gained notoriety for his frequent, fired-up guest spots on Oprah, Phillip C. McGraw (a.k.a. "Dr. Phil") was able to parlay the talk show queen's admiration into his own show and a series of bestselling books, through which he delivers his unapologetic, no-nonsense advice in a tough but colorful down-home style.
