Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien’s children. Inside would be a letter in a strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful colored drawing or painting. The letters were from Father Christmas.
They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house into the dining room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house, and many more.
No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by Tolkien’s inventiveness in this classic holiday treat.
A collection of illustrated letters from Father Christmas recapping the activities of the preceding year at the North Pole. The letters were written by the author to his children.
More Reviews and RecommendationsIt seems an unlikely formula for success: an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon, and a book that begins with a little man who lives in a hole in the ground. But The Hobbit, followed by The Lord of the Rings, created the modern genre of heroic fantasy and made J.R.R. Tolkien one of the most widely-read authors in the world.

December 15, 2008: While my kids think this is a neat book, I think I enjoy this book the most. This is the sweetest book all about the magic of Christmas. It has imspired my husband and I to write our own letters to our kids from Santa even though we're not as creative or artistic as Tolkin. It is a perfect gift to give to friends and family for Christmas.

December 30, 2004: I loved this book so much. J.R.R. Tolkien's writings are beautiful and sweet; I really wished that I could meet Father Christmas and the North Polar Bear. His own illustrations were gorgeous. As I was reading the last page of the book, I felt like crying, because I was saying good-bye to a very wonderful story. I will totally read this book again the next holiday season!
