    Synopsis

Whoever said "family comes first" never met Keysha's mom, Justine. Fresh out of jail, Justine wants to reconnect with her daughter--despite abandoning her to a father she hardly knew. Keysha is sure Justine's troubled past is going to play havoc with her own present and future. To add more drama to the mix, her younger brother, Mike, is now a wannabe player, determined to get with a girl Keysha just knows is trouble.

For once, all of Keysha's hunches are right on target. And now it's up to her to untangle a dangerous mess...before the life and new family she's just begun to build come crashing down around her....

    School Library Journal

Gr 8–10—In this third installment in the series, Keysha has finally managed to attain some fragile sense of normalcy. The wealthy father she had never known has taken her into his family in the suburbs, rescuing her from her selfish mother and the inner-city Chicago neighborhood that threatened to suck her into life as a stoop-dwelling teen mother. With the help of her still-wary half brother Mike and her new boyfriend, Wesley, Keysha finally shakes the stigma of false accusations of drug use and is ready to start over. But even as she manages to distance herself from her old neighborhood, it comes to her—in the form of her deadbeat mother. Despite Justine's extensive past neglect, a judge agrees to award unsupervised visitation, a decision that takes Keysha right back to the environment she has tried so hard to escape. Can she avoid the criminal life and constant chaos that are all her mother has to offer, while also managing to help naïve Mike avoid the same traps? Heavy on plot and light on character development, this novel will have strong appeal to teens who crave drama, action, and problems, problems, problems in their reading. The writing style can be quite stilted and unnatural, with the dialogue between teenage characters ringing especially false. However, fans of urban fiction will likely look past the novel's lack of literary merit to devour the juicy, fast-moving plot.—Meredith Robbins, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School, New York City

    Biography

As a student at Columbia College, Earl Sewell studied both fiction and screenwriting and by the age of twenty he'd written several short stories and a screenplay. Throughout his college years he worked at his local library where he spent a large amount of his free time reading a variety of fiction and romance novels.

Shortly after college Sewell wrote his first novel but after querying publishers and receiving more than twenty rejection letters, Sewell abandoned the dream of becoming a published author.

Years later, after losing his mother to heart failure, Sewell gave writing another shot. He completed his second novel and decided to publish the book on his own. He launched his own publishing company called Katie Books, which he named in honor of his mother. His second effort was a hit with readers and Sewell began to gain a loyal following. Two years later he signed a publishing agreement with a major publishing house. Over the years he has written six novels and has had short stories published in three anthologies and several national romance magazines.

In addition to writing, Sewell has bicycled with a touring group from Red Wing, MN, to Bar Harbor, ME, and recently completed his third Chicago Marathon. He also volunteers as a motivational speaker, touring the country to speak to students about being an author, his life-long love of athletics as well as the power of a positive attitude. In his spare time Sewell enjoys restoring old furniture and gardening. He lives in South Holland, IL, where he is working on his next novel.

July 08, 2009: I absolutely loved "lesson learned" because it really draws you in . I was really captivated and just could not put it down. When I read the ending it really had me on the edge of my seat because that last sentence in the book really left the reader thirsty for more. I cant wait for his next book to come out.And I also cant wait to read why wesley got shot. As a young lady I was was very pleased with how Earl Sewell writes and thinks, because the author is a male and with this book a person would think a female wrote it. But, thats just shows what an awesome writer Earl is.I personally recommend that everybody ,male or female ,go out and buy Lesson learned.

I Also Recommend: Keysha's Drama (Kimani Tru Series), Trouble Follows (Indigo Summer #2), If I Were Your Boyfriend (Kimani Tru Series).
