November 07, 2008: Matt Kloskowski is a Photoshop guru and the co host of Photoshop User TV. He teaches Photoshop and digital photography to thousands of people around the world every year.
Matt is also an instructor at the Photoshop World Conference and is employed full time at the National Association of Photoshop Professionals.

Perhaps one of the most miss-understood subjects that has been previously surrounded in mystery and is frightening to anyone new to Photoshop has been Layers. In this book Matt shows the reader just how fast and easy it is to learn Layers. Saying this does not mean or imply that this book is only for people new to Photoshop because whether you are a novice, intermediate, or advanced you will find something to learn.

The book is divided into nine chapters,
Chapter 1: Layer Basics
Chapter 2: Blending Layers
Chapter 3: Adjustment Layers
Chapter 4: Layer Masks
Chapter 5: Type and Shape Layers
Chapter 6: Enhancing Photos with Layers
Chapter 7: Retouching with Layers
Chapter 8: Layer Styles
Chapter 9: Smart Layers

Each chapter is well illustrated with photographs and graphics and you can either download Matt?s images from his web site or you can use your own images to work with. I myself downloaded Matt?s images so that my work would exactly match each image and step in the book.

Every chapter is split into sub chapters, an example would be chapter 7 Retouching with Layers which starts on page 178 followed by Removing blemishes and Wrinkles on page 180, then Smoothing and enhancing skin on page 185, Making eyes and teeth whiter on page 190, and finally perhaps most important of all at the end of each chapter is a page titled ?How Do I.?
On the How Do I page Matt explains how he does his retouching on a blank layer; this lessens the effect of any retouching he?s done on a layer and he flattens his layers without actually flattening them; obviously the How Do I page at the end of each chapter differs to reflect the short cuts Matt uses for that particular chapter.

For me this book as been long overdue and much needed, a real eye opener into the world of Layers and is a must have book for anyone using Photoshop and needing to learn Layers. In short this is a great five star book well worth the money.

July 08, 2008: The book is an excellent overview of the features on layers, that you need to master in order to learn photoshop well. The book is not specific for photographers, the previous buyer probably got confused.
