Synopsis

Bold, passionate, and erotic, Lady Chatterley's Lover is a truly classic novel of the twentieth century. This is the complete and unexpurgated Grove Press edition that created publishing history when it first appeared in 1959, making Lady Chatterley's Lover legally available in the United States after thirty-one years of suppression.

Annotation

Lawrence's classic explores the themes of inhumanity, love, and need--a potent mixture that kept the book banned in England until the early 1960s. 2 cassettes.

Library Journal

These six very different titles are the latest crop of Penguin's redesigned "Classics Deluxe Editions" Each volume features kick-ass covers drawn by some of today's top graphic artists, including Frank Miller, Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Thomas Ott, Chester Brown, and Tomer Hanuka, with introductions by the likes of Jonathan Lethem and Doris Lessing. Note that the de Sade cover features some nudity and the Lawrence graphics include comics using the F-word and depicting sex acts, so proceed with caution (you'll laugh, but some of your patrons may not). Nonetheless, all beauties. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Biography

Pensive and insightful, D. H. Lawrence brought to his work a frankness that had been missing from early 20th-century fiction. Though novels such as Lady Chatterly's Lover, Sons and Lovers, and others incited controversy and censorship for their sexual content, Lawrence was not being prurient; he was simply trying to describe the world around him, in both his fiction and his many letters and essays.

People get too caught up on sex...by Anonymous

June 30, 2007: Many people are astounded by the explicit depictions of sex Lawrence uses in this book. Though I was also a little surprised in the beginning there is much more to this novel than just the sex scenes. It is more about people waking up to the world and themselves through their different experiences. Stylistically I found the writing beautiful in its simplicity and also, contradictory to what some say, very detailed in both character thought and setting. Overall, Lady Chatterley's Lover is a book everyone should read and explore with an open mind, for the deeper message pertains directly to today's times. Worth the read!!!

Graphic... well, a littleby Anonymous

June 07, 2007: Though I was shocked about certain elements of the book, it was only because I hadn't expected an early 20th century novel to be quite THAT graphic. Compared to modern teen novels and manga, that was just the tip of the iceberg, and I wouldn't advise anyone to avoid this book simply because of those aspects. On the other hand, I hated most of the characters in the book too, causing me to give it an average rating. :)
