      Synopsis

      Criticas

Colombian novelist, journalist, and former activist Restrepo has had her body of work compared to and praised by the likes of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende. She is known for novels that amalgamate investigation with fantasy, like Dulce compasia (The Angel of Galilea, Norma, 1999), which won the Sor Juana In s de la Cruz prize and the Prix France of Culture, and El leopardo al sol (The Leopard in the Sun, Norma, 2000). Originally published by Norma in 1999, this novel brilliantly captures a slice of Colombian life relatively unknown to the outside world. Restrepo was on assignment when she became obsessed with the small oil town of Barrancabermeja, where she based the novel now being re-released in Spanish for American audiences on Harper Rayo. Set in the 1940s at the height of an influx of multinational oil companies, Restrepo's novel re-creates an oil boom town called La Catunga. She tells the story of a charismatic group of international prostitutes who traveled miles and oceans to work their tricks in this small and dusty town. A female journalist (reminiscent of Restrepo herself) arrives in La Catunga to piece together the legend of a beautiful but wild indigenous woman named Sayonara, who drove men crazy with her seductiveness and mystery. Ultimately, Restrepo constructs a tragic love triangle consisting of two friends who fall for the same woman and a prostitute who has never been able to experience true love. Restrepo's passion for the lowest of the class totem pole makes for a novel overflowing with fecund description, raw humanity, and humor in this portrait of humble people who are living their lives as if every day were their last. Highly recommended for alllibraries and bookstores. [The Dark Bride, the first English translation of La novia oscura, is currently available on Harper Ecco.
