"The best damned book from the point of view of the infantrymen who fought there."Army Times
Among the best books ever written about men in combat, The Killing Zone tells the story of the platoon of Delta One-six, capturing what it meant to face lethal danger, to follow orders, and to search for the conviction and then the hope that this war was worth the sacrifice. The book includes a new chapter on what happened to the platoon members when they came home.
Frederick Downs received four Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star with Valor, and the Silver Star for his service in the Vietnam War. He lives in Fort Washington, Maryland.

January 22, 2007: From the perface which just got me started, to the last word on page 237. It was action packed with what I think every man went through while they were in such a crappy that our government put them in. You could trust NO ONE, you never knew who the enemy was, where it was, or who it might be. Old lady old man or a 14 year old kid. This is my 19th book on the Vietnam War and I would have to say I think it was the best. I would love to meet Fredrick Downs one day. Jarrett Garrison Charlotte N.C.

March 07, 2006: This book is a wonderful but seemingly underrated narrative of one mans experience filled with honesty and emotion of his time in the Vietnam War. I suggest it for anyone who'd like to get the GI's perspective of the war. ---Enjoy!
