December 19, 2008: I do see a market for this kind of book, which provides 'just enough' information about web programming techniques.

At one extreme, you have expert web programmers who need an in-depth guide to a specific technology like PHP. At the other extreme you have people who just want to create a simple web page using a basic HTML editor. Somewhere in the middle you have a group of people like my target audience.

While my books teach people how to use Yahoo! Pipes and other mashup technologies designed for 'intermediates', I don't want to give anything more than simple examples of how -- for example -- the Y! Pipes results can be embedded in a web page using HTML and JavaScript, perhaps styled with CSS. Nor do I want to teach people what RSS is, or how to device web services that can be called from the Y! Pipes. In other words, it would be useful for my readers to have a round-up of the periphery web techniques and technologies -- so that I can focus on my own topic.

The title of this book is a little problematic for me. The "Just Enough Web Programming" is attractive to the intermediates, but the "XHTML, PHP, and MySQL" part might be a little off-putting. Not only because it sounds technical; but also because it sells this book short. Why not also mention CSS, RSS, Ajax, JavaScript and other technologies discussed in this book?
