    Synopsis

Being a princess isn't all that....

You've heard the fairytale: a glass slipper, Prince Charming, happily ever after...

Welcome to reality: royal genealogy lessons, needlepoint, acting like "a proper lady," and — worst of all — a prince who is not the least bit interesting, and certainly not charming.

As soon-to-be princess Ella deals with her newfound status, she comes to realize she is not "your majesty" material. But breaking off a royal engagement is no easy feat, especially when you're crushing on another boy in the palace.... For Ella to escape, it will take intelligence, determination, and spunk — and no ladylike behavior allowed.

    Annotation

In this continuation of the Cinderella story, fifteen-year-old Ella finds that accepting Prince Charming's proposal ensnares her in a suffocating tangle of palace rules and royal etiquette, so she plots to escape.

Just Ella:living proof that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.by SarahParkison

December 06, 2009: Imagine life as a princess. What could go wrong when you have everything handed to you, right? Especially when you are coming from living with an evil stepmother and sisters you want to scream at but can't. Well, this picture perfect life wasn't a match for Margaret Peterson Haddix's main character Ella. In her novel, Just Ella, she takes you through the roughest time of young Ella's life. Ella experiences danger, a quest for love, and comes to the realization that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Ella had been living with her mean stepmother and sisters, hating life, until she went to the ball. She went to meet the man of her dreams (the prince). They had met and decided to get married (just like the story of Cinderella). So, she moved into the enormous castle and was expecting to have the time of her life. Things weren't exactly going as Ella was expecting. She wanted the dream life with the Prince, but ended up getting a daily routine of activities that wasn't fun whatsoever, and the Prince wasn't nice. The only thing she liked about him was his extraordinary looks. Things weren't so great after all. When Ella tries to escape, things don't go as planned. It will keep you on your tip toes nervous about the next pages.

Haddix writes this book phenomenally geared towards the teenage age group. They can enjoy an easy read and also get a real story that is more complex than pigs or teddy bears. There is some adult humor that I think is good to add to a story like this to show that Haddix doesn't think stupidly of teenagers. I enjoyed how the author made Ella such a strong willed girl which inspires girls to stand up for themselves. However, there are some drawbacks to Just Ella, one being just how easy to read it is. It could have used a little more complex sentence structures and maybe gave more variety of word choice. The overall appearance of the inside of the book proves this. The font is very large, and there isn't many words overall.

Subsequently, I would give Just Ella, 3 out of 5 stars. The story line is good, however the fact that it is too easy, makes the story somewhat not appealing. The main lesson I got out of this book is that you always need to stick up for yourself as Ella did when she realized that was not the life she wanted to live.

October 18, 2009: The book really makes people question what the really want, and what they are willing to give up for it. The ending left me hanging. I was very disappointed. I felt like the author rushed the ending.

I Also Recommend: My Sister's Keeper.
