“Ravishing…Combines the dark mythology of fantasy with the delicious social comedy of Jane Austen into a masterpiece of the genre that rivals Tolkien.”—Time

At the dawn of the nineteenth century, two very different magicians emerge to change England’s history. In the year 1806, with the Napoleonic Wars raging on land and sea, most people believe magic to be long dead in England—until the reclusive Mr Norrell reveals his powers, and becomes a celebrity overnight.

Soon, another practicing magician comes forth: the young, handsome, and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell’s student, and they join forces in the war against France. But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic, straining his partnership with Norrell, and putting at risk everything else he holds dear.

“What kind of magic can make an 800-page novel seem too short? Whatever it is, debut author Susanna Clarke is possessed by it.”—USA Today

“From beginning to end, a perfect pleasure.”—Neil Gaiman

    USA Today - Edward Nawotka

It takes 100 pages for Clarke to establish her milieu, but most readers, once enchanted, will remain under her spell until the very last page.

    Biography

Her first novel Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell establishes Susanna Clarke as a new fantasy writer to watch. The story of two magicians in early nineteenth-century London is a fanciful, absorbing book that promises to gain fans outside the dedicated fantasy audience.

January 06, 2010: This tale of two English gentlemen magicians in the early 19th century is a literary masterpiece ! Often whimsical and painfully ironic, Susanna Clarke has hit upon that fine line between simplicity and sophistication leaving the reader with a pleasant experience. Be warned though, this in not Harry Potter.

It is often dark and the plot, complex. Perhaps the greatest achievement of this work is Clarke's attention to detail (particularly historical). What with all the references, footnotes and side-stories, the reader can only come to the conclusion that there were in fact a historical Mr. Strange and Mr. Norrell and English magic does in fact exist. In a word, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is insanely witty. It is not, however, for the faint of heart. Enjoy!

    Cheers

December 07, 2009: A first look at Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell might deter many a reader-- it's quite a thick book, 846 pages long and thick enough to use in place of a car jack. But don't be put off by the size of Susanna Clarke's debut. By some magic of her own, Mrs. Clarke managed to make this thick read fly by like a flimsy paperback, AND have me wishing that I was still reading it after I'd finished. Everything about this book had me wanting more-- the characterization of the two main characters was great(she had me loving Mr. Norrell and Jonathon Strange) and all of the intricate little subplots that eventually combined into one big, fascinating climax truly enthralling. At one point I was a little concerned that the book was going to veer off into the serious, creepy sort of mood that one often finds in fantasy & science fiction novels (which I tend to dislike), but Mrs. Clarke's easy dialogue and witty comments managed to keep the book lighthearted and magical throughout. A wonderful read for anyone who loves fantasy, as well as those who love magic but don't love the sort of weirdness that many magical books tend to steert towards.
