I purchased this book to use for a grad school paper I was doing on Japan. I needed a 30K foot view of the country to understand the country's customs, nuances, history as well as its relationship with the U.S. and other countries as an island nation.

I've been interested in Japanese arts and martial ways for a number of years. but, without some general framework for Japanese history the prints, calligraphy and swords are just lovely isolates.
