July 08, 2003: Venezia makes art history fun. My kids are 3 and 6 and ENJOY this book. He describes Pollock as a kid, including how his mother encouraged all 5 boys to explore their creative side. This page has a fun illustration of the kids painting in the kitchen and making a huge mess. The combination of Venezia's comedic drawings and Pollock's wild, rich canvases humanize this complex artist. The text explains complex art interpretation in simple easy to understand terms, 'Sometimes people have trouble understanding Jackson Pollock's paintings. They feel that anyone could have thrown paint around and done just as good a job. But Jackson knew what he was doing. When you stand in front of a huge Jackson Pollock painting, you get a feeling of being surrounded by light and color, movement and energy, that is very exciting!'
