      Nothing concentrates the mind of a reporter with a severe case of writer's block like an opportune murder or two. Cassie O'Malley's job with a New Jersey tabloid may be on its last legs. Her new boss, impatient with the non-producing Cassie, sends her to cover the Christmas shopping rush at the mall. Bored, Cassie spends most of her time in the food court watching children visit Santa Claus until loan shark Big Mack is found dead in the men's room. His vengeful son Little Mack doesn't take kindly to security guard Oliver Berryhill's claim that he knifed him in a fight over stolen jewelry. Nor does Detective Eddie "Eggs" Bebedict, with whom Cassie has quickly clicked. Even though his boss has closed the case, Eggs suspects that the absence of fingerprints on the knife proves that Oliver's lying. The list of possible killers includes Cassie's former boss, who was deep in debt to Big Mack. Oliver's covering up thefts at the mall. Even Santa has secrets. Though it's bad for business, a second body, identified as that of a pawnbroker, provides the clue that points Cassie and Eggs toward a killer. On the evidence here, Markowitz's humorous murder series (A Minor Case of Murder, 2006, etc.) isn't exactly laugh-out-loud funny, but you'll meet a number of amusing characters en route to the surprise ending.

      October 30, 2009: You will find yourself racing along with the author through The Jersey Pines to figure out who was where, when they were there, why they were there, with whom they were with, you may find yourself guessing who did what, when did they, or when didn't they tell the truth to the head "Egg"...race race race... is what you'll do for the first two thirds of this fine murder mystery. You will race like a last minute shopper before you can take a deep breath and settle into the last third of this book. It is in the last 80 or 90 pages that you will realize just how well thought out Jeff's latest Cassie O'Malley murder mystery actually is... you may need to miss half a day of work to get to the point where you can slow it down, in fact you will force yourself to do just that because you will NOT want the book to end. You may have the urge to drink lots of coffee, or some Irish Whiskey, you will want to listen to a few jazz CD's and, you may even have a craving for eggs (any style) in your favorite egg joint. You will get the impression that our dear Cassie has gotten a bit older, psst haven't we all? One thing that doesn't get old though is Jeff's unique story telling ability!

      October 01, 2009: Jersey Knews Magazine reporter Cassie O'Malley has been totally unproductive since her former mentor and boss Morris sold the tabloid to Jack Cambrian. Her new employer is tired of her attitude and lack of articles so he warns her to change her attitude and produce some articles. He assigns her to the Mall of Jersey to cover the Christmas shopping. Totally bored, Cassie watches Santa with the kids, but has no articles worth writing.

      Security guard Oliver Berryhill finds loan shark Big Mack dead in the men's room. He claims he killed the man during a knife fight when he confronted the loan shark over stolen merchandise. Police Detective Eddie "Eggs" Bebedict thinks the guard is lying; as the knife lacked fingerprints while Big Mack's only surviving son Little Mack vows to kill Berryhill. Meanwhile a pawnbroker related to the case unbeknownst to the cop and the reporter also is found dead.

      This is an engaging investigative tale starring a strong cast and climaxing with a great twist. Cassie and Eggs make an interesting combination while the support cast adds eccentricity and crime to the mix. Humor is found in nearby Woodbine where accidents also occur. Still fans will celebrate Cassie's Christmas caper (see WHO IS KILLING DOAH'S DEER for her first case).
