Primary grade readers will find enough information about Ireland to help them gain an awareness of the country and its people and broaden their knowledge of the world. There is one topic per page (the land, life at home, school, crafts and music, holidays and celebrations), each with an accompanying full-page color photograph, and the text is clear and concise. A glossary, an index and a web site round out the book. The Irish team game called Pass the Orange resembles a familiar party game icebreaker and does not seem particularly "Irish" to this reviewer. The two beguiling colleens on the cover lure the reader to pick this book up but the substance is not much more than a general encyclopedia article. As with the others books in this "Countries of the World" series, the information presented is broad and meant only to serve as an introduction to the country. 2001, Capstone Press, $17.26. Ages 6 to 9. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
