    Nancy P. Schell

This is a comprehensive introduction to clinical psychiatry, with coverage of major psychiatric diagnoses, what is known of their etiology, manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as thorough, practical discussions of psychosocial and doctor/patient relationship issues. The purpose is to introduce non-psychiatrists to the wide range of psychiatric disorders and their basic features in order to aid clinicians in effective assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. It is aimed at non-psychiatric practitioners and students. It is a concise overview of clinical psychiatry. Each of the major psychiatric diagnoses is outlined to include the definition, epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, differential diagnoses, and treatments, as well as medical staffs' emotional reactions to patients, cross-cultural aspects, legal/ethical issues, a conclusion, and references. Ample illustrative case histories clarify relevant parts of the text. Very current, this book is a tool to provide the clinician with the latest views to provide direct, clear-cut practical approaches to the patient. The editor successfully integrates the biological, psychological, and sociological aspects of psychiatric illness from etiology to treatment. Certain chapters are solely dedicated to looking at suicide, special populations, systems theories, cross-cultural issues, and the homeless. This is a very useful book for those dealing directly with patients. It is concise, easy to read, and clinically relevant, with a multi-faceted approach to the patient. This book is highly recommended.
