      Doody Review Services

      Reviewer:Roberto J Colon, MD (Wright-Patterson AFB Hospital)
Description:This review encompasses most of the commonly encountered internal medicine clinical scenarios and provides a strong basic education in the medical problems discussed and their usual clinical presentations.
Purpose:It is intended as a learning supplement for students during their internal medicine clerkship in the third year of medical school. This is a very worthwhile endeavor as the third year clerkship can be instrumental in a student's development into a competent clinician. The authors succeed in creating a book that can easily be considered the ideal supplement for third year medical students in the internal medicine clerkship.
Audience:Third year medical students are the target audience. Students will benefit greatly from using this resource.
Features:The book reviews major internal medicine conditions at an appropriate level of detail for early learners. It provides a good basic reference of the "bread and butter" medical conditions internists see in their patients on a daily basis. This well organized and easy to read book avoids straying too deeply into minutiae or exceptions and focuses students on the major points of each condition. A major benefit is the book enhancement section at the conclusion of each chapter which supplements the book's material. The only minor deficiency is the absence of a more thorough physiology and pathophysiology discussion for the major sections that could allow students to better understand the mechanisms of disease. As students are often not very familiar with diagnostic testing, a sectionaddressing laboratory tests and basic imaging (CXR, CT) often used in internal medicine would also be valuable.
Assessment:I am impressed with the balance the book achieves between quantity and quality of information. Students can gain the appropriate level of initial knowledge about internal medicine problems and develop a framework to seek additional knowledge if desired. Its easy readability makes it an ideal companion for on call and the extensive topics make it useful for preparing for clerkship tests. This second edition is published two years after the first. With medicine ever evolving with numerous landmark studies and frequent updates in guidelines, frequent revisions of the book are indeed necessary to avoid getting outdated.
