      Synopsis

Featured in Library Journal's "Best Consumer Health Books of 2007", Inside Alzheimer's shows that there is a person inside Alzheimer's and any of the other dementias-a person, just like the rest of us. We each need to be heard, seen, valued, and appreciated by another human being-to feel a part of the flow of the intangible gifts of humor, wisdom, and understanding found in the person-to-person connection. The disease, no matter how progressed, does not alter the enjoyment and satisfaction that comes from being in vital relationship with others, but the person's opportunity for connection lessens, usually because we presume it too difficult or impossible.

The core teaching of this book is that creating opportunities for moments of connection with persons with dementia is basic compassionate and transformational care. When I can hear and appreciate the person's wisdom or see a gesture that weaves me into his world, or enjoy a moment of mutual spontaneous emotion, we both move beyond isolation and hopelessness. Each of us is empowered forward to grow.

Inside Alzheimer's offers over 20 years of the author's experience and tells how dozens of persons with dementia and their sharing of wisdom, humor and life's teachings led Ms. Pearce to the six basic principles of connection-how one person connects with another: Intend a connection, Free yourself of judgment, Love, Open to receive love, Silence and Thankfulness. Case studies and exercises are provided for internalizing these principles which have empowered hundreds of family, friends, and professionals to create moments of connection with persons, regardless of how advanced the dementia.
