One cruel night, Meggie's father, Mo, reads aloud from INKHEART, and an evil ruler named Capricorn escapes the boundaries of fiction, landing instead in their living room. Suddenly, Meggie's in the middle of the kind of adventure she thought only took place in fairy tales. Somehow she must master the magic that has conjured up this nightmare. Can she change the course of the story that has changed her life forever?
"Beguiling...the story seems to have been sprinkled with some magical fairy dust."--The New York Times Book Review
Twelve-year-old Meggie learns that her father, who repairs and binds books for a living, can "read" fictional characters to life when one of those characters abducts them and tries to force him into service.
Tackling Funke's (The Thief Lord) meaty, intricately plotted tale of magic and books, Redgrave colors her reading with appropriately varying degrees of suspense, revelation and drama. Twelve-year-old Meggie, a self-proclaimed bookworm, finds it odd that her bookbinder father, Mo, has never read aloud to her. But when a mysterious man named Dustfinger appears in the rainy shadows of the garden one night, Meggie begins to unravel the secret her father has kept all her life: when Mo reads aloud from books, the characters come to life and appear before him. This magical power proves dangerous, as characters from a certain book-Inkheart-are on the loose and after Mo. Many twists and turns that will particularly intrigue those who love books unfold before Meggie ultimately learns that she and her father have something in common when it comes to magic. Redgrave's voice takes on growling, sometimes whispery qualities as she portrays villains; a brighter inquisitive tone prevails as Meggie makes observations and interacts with the other characters. The end result is a satisfying listen, perfect for long winter evenings by the fire. Ages 11-up. (Oct.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

November 16, 2009: Inkheart is probably the best fantasy story that I have ever read. With its well developed characters, intriguing and susupensful plot, and beautiful illustrations, Inkheart is truly a wonderful novel. I reccommend this story to anyone who enjoys reading fantasy novels and who can keep up with a fast-pace plot. Inkheart is not particularly challlenging, however if one does not pay attention, they can get lost in the plot. Inkheart is the first of a short series consisting of three books, and I highly reccommend reading the whole series. After getting hooked on the first one, you'll be dying to get your hands on the next two books. I first read Inkheart when I was in the sixth grade and am currently reading it again. Like so many other books, Inkheart is one of those stories that you can curl into warm covers by a fire and read time and time agaian. Cornelia Funke did a marvelous job in creating this novel and that is why I believe that Inkheart is one of the best fantasy novels around, and I highly reccommend both the novel series and the movie. The book is better than the movie, as in many cases, however it was highly enjoyable. Much applause to Cornelia Funke and her work.
I Also Recommend: Inkheart, Inkspell (Inkheart Trilogy #2), Inkdeath (Inkheart Trilogy #3), Dragon Rider.
