    Synopsis

Montana, Wyoming, and the Trinity Alps of northern California are the landscapes of these elegant, rough-hewn narratives where people yearn for grace even as their chances are running out. "Roy Parvin has a sense of what people will do when they have reached their particular limits," says Charles Baxter, "and these wonderful tales are like visions." A recently paroled ex-con tries to outrun a violent past. An out-of-work logger finds an unexpected kind of love. And a woman's journey by rail through a western snowscape becomes a bittersweet tale of redemption.

Author Biography: Roy Parvin, author of The Loneliest Road in America, lives in the woods of northern California. His essays have appeared in Northern Lights.

Roy Parvin is an exciting voice. The power of these novellas is surprising, the writing is extraordinary.

October 11, 2000: Last month, I was waiting to meet my second-grade teacher, who had seen the announcement of my upcoming wedding in the local press and called me, much to my surprise. Anyway, she remembered me and my precocious talent for silhouettes, and she called my secretary to set up a meeting. So, I was waiting to meet my old teacher?who by the way I hardly remembered, though, funny, this does happen alot?and I saw this book highlighted as one the best books out there right now. And I thought Hey, I Like Snow, I've Been Skiiing (in Squaw Valley, where condos went cheap until the year after I bought mine). So I picked it up and was reading the first novella. I was caught, captured, catapulted by the opening passage and kept reading and reading. The beautiful, icy words tugged at me, even when my teacher arrived. 'Listen to this,' I said. And I read out loud, sentence by amazing sentence until we stood there, staring at each other in wonder. 'Look,' I said, 'look what we found.' Buy this book. Right now.

August 16, 2000: These novellas are remarkable! The language is hypnotically beautiful, and the characters and their stories are compelling -you just can't shake them. This Roy Parvin is some kind of master...highly recommend the book for anyone who enjoys the sort of great fiction that manages to reveal something previously untold about human nature.
