December 17, 2003: I must say that as a college student that has now taken the writing class in which this is one of two of my text books, this book is the best 15 bucks I ever spent on a text book!! This book is always informative, with a little history to go with the nuts and bolts. Loads of examples fill the chapters to help you understand from the masters at our craft. These are all important, as Kowit takes us through the realm of poetry. As a begginers guide, I would recomend it as well as a text book for college and H.S. teachers alike. Plus, its just plain easy to read. When I start teacing soon, I will defnitly use this as a required text, and teach out of it.

January 26, 2000: In this beautifully crafted work, Steve Kowit takes ANYONE interested in writing poetry through a guided tour of wonderful examples and inspirations. His exercises will have your creative juices virtually erupting and you will find yourself truly understanding the concept of 'looking at the world with a poets eye (and listening and feeling and tasting, too). He follows his own advise and doesn't just 'tell,' he 'shows.' If you can't be lucky enough to attend one of his classes or workshops in person, he has given you one here 'In the Palm of Your Hand.' This should be on the bookshelf of every poetry teacher in the country and everyone else who wants to discover the joys (and pains!) of poetry writing.
