      Synopsis

A critically acclaimed novel that will change the way you look at life, love, and family.

In the blink of an eye everything changes. Seventeen-year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall what happened afterwards, watching her own damaged body being taken from the wreck. Little by little she struggles to put together the pieces- to figure out what she has lost, what she has left, and the very difficult choice she must make. Heartwrenchingly beautiful, Mia's story will stay with you for a long, long time.

      Publishers Weekly

The last normal moment that Mia, a talented cellist, can remember is being in the car with her family. Then she is standing outside her body beside their mangled Buick and her parents' corpses, watching herself and her little brother being tended by paramedics. As she ponders her state ("Am I dead?I actually have to ask myself this"), Mia is whisked away to a hospital, where, her body in a coma, she reflects on the past and tries to decide whether to fight to live. Via Mia's thoughts and flashbacks, Forman (Sisters in Sanity) expertly explores the teenager's life, her passion for classical music and her strong relationships with her family, friends and boyfriend, Adam. Mia's singular perspective (which will recall Alice Sebold's adult novel, The Lovely Bones) also allows for powerful portraits of her friends and family as they cope: "Please don't die. If you die, there's going to be one of those cheesy Princess Diana memorials at school," prays Mia's friend Kim. "I know you'd hate that kind of thing." Intensely moving, the novel will force readers to take stock of their lives and the people and things that make them worth living. Ages 14-up. (Apr.)

Wonderful Book for Young Adults...Turned my 13-yr-old into a believer in the art of reading!by Anonymous

November 04, 2009: My 13-yr-old has never been a reader. She has just never found enjoyment in sitting still really. She struggled with book reports, and I always thought it was just a matter of finding the 'right' book to turn her around.

As a school requirement, she was assigned a book report on a book of her own choosing...which worried me and frustrated her. After borrowing this book from the library for myself, I mentioned to her that I really thought she would enjoy this particular book. She agreed to try it and loved it. She simply could not put it down. She talked to me about the story line often and mentioned crying and feeling for the characters. She even asked if I would buy it for her so she would have it at home to read again and again. She is wanting to research additional books of similar story lines and by the same author! Thanks a million to Gayle Forman...you have done the impossible in more ways than one!

October 25, 2009: Want a new perspective on the wonders of life? If I Stay will show you to take nothing for granted. This heart-wrenching book will be sure to bring a tear to your eye. This story of a young girl's trials will leave you deep in thought by the end. If I Stay by Gayle Forman is a great read for teens and adults, you won't be able to put it down.

Mia's story beings in a small town in Oregon, on a snowy morning. The family decides to go out for a drive; a decision that will forever change their lives. A car crash on this snowy morning leaves the family in tragic condition. As Mia narrates her life throughout the book changing from past to present she shows her quirky but loving parents and brother, that will give you a whole new insight on the word family. Gayle Forman shows her amazing talent in this beautifully written piece, If I Stay.

This book will capture your heart and take it for an emotional ride that will have you laughing one second and crying the next. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone looking for an entertaining story, one that shares the emotions of a teenage girl fighting for life, figuring out the meaning of love, and making a choice that will forever change lives.
