Description:This spiral bound, laminated, pocket-sized book is designed for use as a quick reference for the bedside care of critically ill adults. Part of the Made Incredibly Quick series of clinical nursing references, it includes sections on patient assessment, laboratory results, medications, emergency care, ECG monitoring, critical care monitoring, and selected resources.
Purpose:This book allows users to quickly retrieve information about the assessment of critically ill individuals and use of basic critical care technology. The size, spiral binding, laminated pages which will not stain, and essential content make it well suited for its purpose.
Audience:It would be most useful to a nurse new to critical care practice, but it would also be useful to nursing students participating in critical care practicums. A more experienced nurse would find it too basic to be of significant value. The emphasis is on assessment techniques and interpretation of data from devices used to monitor critically ill patients.
Features:Sections cover physical examination techniques, common laboratory results, medications used with critically ill individuals, ACLS algorithms, basic information regarding ECG monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation, interpretation of systemic and pulmonary arterial and ICP waveforms as well as sedation assessment measures. The book has two unique features. In the resources section, two pages of patient care pictures are presented with English and Spanish labels, handy for establishing very basic communication withSpanish-speaking patients. The entire book has laminated pages, which will not absorb spilled fluids and can be written on and then wiped clean.
Assessment:The handbook presents basic but essential information that would be useful in practice. Section tabs make retrieval easy, and it truly is a pocket friendly size. Many other such books would never fit into a pocket and contain so much material that it is difficult to retrieve the desired information. Print size is small but still readable for even the average RN (aged 47 or older) whose vision might be affected by age. Additional information regarding mechanical ventilation would improve the value. The price is competitive with other similar products.
