    Synopsis

I Walked the Line is a chronicle of first love, long-kept secrets, betrayal, forgiveness, and the truth--told at last by Johnny Cash's first wife, the mother of his four daughters. It is a book that had the full support of Johnny Cash, who insisted it was time for their story to be told, despite any painful revelations that might come to light as a result.

Many myths and contradictions regarding the life of Johnny and his family have been perpetuated for decades in film and literature. Vivian exposes previously untold stories involving Johnny's drug addiction, his fraught family life, and their divorce in 1968, as well as the truth behind the writing of two of Johnny's most famous songs, "I Walk the Line" and "Ring of Fire."

Supplemented by a never-before-published archive of love letters and family photos, I Walked the Line offers a deeper look at one of the most sig- nificant artists in music history. Here, fans and readers can experience the extraordinary account of love and heartbreak between Johnny and Vivian, and come to understand Vivian's dignified silence over the years. Through this elegant, revealing, and powerful memoir, Vivian Cash's voice is finally heard.

The New York Times - Janet Maslin

I Walked the Line is a wildly romantic book, but also a sad and wrenching one, a testament to the destructive power of hopes pushed past the breaking point. Although Ms. Cash's narrative sounds almost willfully naive, that serves to make her book more revealing. The absence of her hindsight and analysis, combined with the poignant pathology on display, make this an unusually intriguing memoir. There is ample room for the reader to see what was both invisible and inevitable in these young lovers' vision of a happy married life.

The other side of the story!by Anonymous

August 22, 2009: Worth reading just to learn something about the "seldom mentioned" 1st wife of Johnny Cash. The beginning, as well as the ending, of the book was interesting but all the letters from him to her when they were teenagers were typical of what a homesick 19 year old might write and were very boring. It's well worth the sale cost of the book to hear the other side of the Cash/Carter romance. Apparently, June wanted her man (and his money) at any cost. I'd recommend this book for any Cash fan but anyone else would not find it very interesting. I' glad I read it.

May 23, 2009: I was amazed at how I could read a book written by someone I never knew and see a lot of my life displayed. To "walk the line" is a gift in loving someone that we must be proud of even though it is not returned to us. Love like that is rare and demostrates a respect for a human heart entrusted to another. To readers I say, continue to walk the line. There is always a blessing in doing the right thing. There will always be someone who want what you have or want to destroy what you have built. Still walk the line. I would recommend this book to couples now starting out.
