Synopsis

A novel on mental illness, narrated by a man whose twin brother, a schizophrenic, amputates his hand as atonement for his sins. The novel describes the family abuse that led to the illness and the narrator's efforts to obtain the brother's release from an asylum. Synopsis copyright Fiction Digest

The New York Times Book Review - Karen Karbo

I Know This Much is True never grapples with anything less than life's biggest questions....a modern-day Dostoyevsky with a pop sensibility. In his view, it's not just the present that's the pits...it's also the ghosts of dysfunctional family members and your non-relationship with a mocking, sadistic God, whom you still turn to in times of trouble -- which is all the time.

Biography

Wally Lamb's books are neither short nor simple; but like a James Patterson of emotions, he pulls readers in and doesn't let go. His affecting novels She's Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True are marvels of imagination and empathy.

I loved Thomas he is a guy who will take you through his life with the help of a therapist and his grandfathers life story. I like that the author takes you to different times in his life and then brings you back to present time. This book is definatly well written story. Its hard to believe that one person can go thru so much in ones life. Then to find some of the truth and finally find out who his father is ect.

At first, when I saw this book, I’ll have to admit I was intimidated. It looked like it would long and tiring, but had an interesting title and cover, so I decided I would read it. The first hundred pages, I’ll have to say were a bit on the boring side, but after I passed the boring it slowly became one of the best books that I have ever read. Wally Lamb has an amazing sense of detail, and I still think about the characters I 'met' in this book. This is one of two books that I have ever read, and actually missed the characters. This book was very long, almost the longest I’ve ever read, but certainly worth the length. It really was a book that I could not put down. The only bad thing about it was that it was too memorable. The book always had me wondering, laughing, and crying. In ways it was predicable, but more so it was unpredictable, I never saw the last 100 pages coming. It was probably one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I’ve read a lot of books. It's definitely in my top two, second only to The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak.

Also recommended: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard by James Frey, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
