This account of one girl's Holocaust experience is rich for its interweaving of autobiography and historical data. At age six, Auerbacher was forced to wear the yellow star that set her apart. Then she was sent to the Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. Fifteen thousand children entered that camp, but only a hundred exited alive. And of more than 1000 people who arrived with Auerbacher, only 15 survived. It's a moving story supported by well-preserved wartime photographs and Bernbaum's harsh, spare drawings. The author's ability to survive is linked to her later capacity to translate hardship and tragedy into poetry of hope and perseverance. Her perspective, while chilling, pierces the heart with memorable imagery, such as envying the birds, which are free to fly away from the camp. Ages 11-up. (April)

December 12, 2007: My Review on I am a Star I am a Star is an interesting autobiography on Inge Auerbacher, a survivor of the Holocaust. It is in the the history genre. I actually read this book for a Social Studies class. Personally, I thought that the book was very interesting and sad. Though it eventually ends with a happy ending, many sad things happen throughout it. I hope you enjoy my review. I am a Star is a sad book about how Inge Auerbacher and how her family is taken to a concentration camp called Terezin by the Nazis. Her family is taken to Terezin on Kristallnacht, or in English, The Night of Broken Glass. On this night there were massive riots against the Jews all over Germany. Throughout this book, she tells the story of her stay at Terezin from 1942-1945. Her tale is very sad and shows how many Jews lived at concentration camps. I hope you will read this book and that you will see how Inge Auerbacher lived. In my opinion, I am a Star has some strengths and some weaknesses. For example, one strength is that it paints a mental picture with its descriptions and it also shows you real photos taken when she was young. I believe that one weakness of the book was that it had too many poems. I would be reading and then it would cut me off and have a poem. I don?t really like being cut off. Other than this, the book was pretty good and again I hope you read it. In my opinion, there are some people that would not enjoy the book. For example, people who like autobiographies, biographies, true accounts, and history would probably enjoy this book. However, I don?t think that people who look into the adventure, action, sci-fi, or fantasy genres would particularly enjoy this book. There is not much action or adventure in it at all. I doubt that they would love it as much as history lovers. This concludes my recommendations. My overall opinion of I am a Star was that it was a middle class book. It wasn?t to good or too bad.In my opinion though, it was a very sad story with a happy ending. The book does have an appealing sense of nature to history lovers. To summarize, it was an exceptional book.
