Synopsis

Robert Neville may well be the last living man on Earth . . . but he is not alone.

An incurable plague has mutated every other man, woman, and child into bloodthirsty, nocturnal creatures who are determined to destroy him.

By day, he is a hunter, stalking the infected monstrosities through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for dawn....

Richard Matheson's classic novel has now been transformed by Warner Bros. into a major motion picture starring Academy Award nominee Will Smith. Directed by Francis Lawrence (“Constantine”), the film opens nationwide in December 2007.

Gale Research

Two film versions of I Am Legend have already been made, including The Last Man on Earth, a low-budget Italian picture starring Vincent Price, and The Omega Man, a 1971 Warner Bros. release that featured Charlton Heston in the title role.

Customer Rating for this product is 5 out of 5 Matheson is fantastic in 'I Am Legend'
Joe, A reviewer, 09/01/2008

Following the completion of my reading of 'I Am Legend', Richard Matheson just might be one of my favorite authors. Easily, 'I Am Legend' is now one of my top 5 favorite books of all time. My reason for reading the novel was that I was disappointed in the ending of the movie. Be warned, the book is almost entirely different from the film. Except for the fact that his name is still “Robert Neville” and he believes himself to be the last man on earth at first, almost everything changes. To name a few of the major changes without spoiling anything: His family is killed in a much more tragic way, he does not have a great dog relationship as shown in the movie, and finally, the ending is just completely different. Don’t misinterpret me, if you loved the movie just the way it is then you will love the book as well. However, if you disliked the movie a bit but loved the setting, and theme then you will still love the book no matter how vastly different it is. A few of the most interesting parts of the book is where Matheson will spend three to four chapters solely building up a major plot arc, and then crush it with a single sentence. This single sentence is a great choice, because you have no way to spoil it by your eye wandering around the next page. Sometimes after reading this sentence you are shocked because what is 20 to 30 pages of building content for a single character or situation is completely destroyed, and tossed to the side in an instant. With those few sentences, the book rises from a great story to a fantastic horror novel. In addition to you getting the “I Am Legend” novel, you also have 10 short stories by Matheson. These have no relation to the main novel, so I did not spend but a half an hour reading a short few. They still have the same writing elements of Matheson’s work in “I Am Legend”, but they take a hit from not being full novels. To wrap it all up, “I Am Legend” is just a fantastic book, and whether you liked, loved, disliked, or even hated the recent film (2007), you will absolutely love the book.

Richard Matheson is a storyteller! Listening to the book on CD performed by Robertson Dean, I was able to experience all the emotions fear, grief, love, sorry, survivor, empathy, etc. Matheson did a great job bringing modern day vampires to life.
