    Synopsis

This historical novel is based on Urrea's real great-aunt Teresita, who had healing powers and was acclaimed as a saint. Urrea has researched historical accounts and family records for years to get an accurate story.

The Washington Post - Joanne Omang

To the very end, The Hummingbird's Daughter is a book of surprises and savory treasures. Urrea's much-praised recent work, The Devil's Highway , was a journalistic re-creation of the deaths of 14 Mexicans who crossed illegally into the U.S. southern desert in 2001. He has loosened his expressive reportorial skills to write lyrical fiction, and we can only be grateful.

December 18, 2008: This intriguing story grew on me with each page. Almost dreamlike, it filled my imagination until I felt like I was living the tale. What a joyful experience to fill your head with the imagery, history and culture of this time and place in Mexico. I highly recommend The Hummingbird's Daughter, and I will continue to pass it on as a gift until everyone I know has read it!

August 20, 2008: I checked this out from the library based on the reviews here. The basic story line is good, and I found myself interested in the characters. But the plot took so long to develop, it was an effort to stay committed. After halfway through the book, I realized I was skipping paragraphs just to try and get to some activity. Beautiful, well-written langauge - colors and images are fantastic! But the plot just moves a bit too slowly for me.
