June 10, 2008: I love the cover of 'How to Knit a Wild Bikini'. It screams ?fun beach read? and the story inside more than fulfills the promise. The heroine of this book is Nikki Carmichael, a no-nonsense 27 year old Southern California chef who holds people at a distance, lives alone in a dinky rented condo with only a fish for company, abhors sloppy emotions and, as taught by her late father, never lets anyone think she?s weak. Jay Buchanan, our hero, is the smart, sexy editor of NYFM, a popular LA men?s magazine. The rich playboy has beautiful women falling all over him but has tired of the game and has vowed to give up women for a year. When Jay needs a private chef for the month of August, his former chef steers him in Nikki?s direction. Sparks fly at their first meeting though both Nikki and Jay are determined to ignore the attraction. But when Nikki convinces Jay to hire her as his private chef and Jay makes pretending to be his lover to keep other women away part of the job requirements, all bets are off. Watching these two overcome obstacles of their own making, while coming to terms with their feelings about themselves and each other was a lot of fun. The dialogue between them is smart and snappy while nicely balanced with internal dialogue that peels away the surface and gives us insight into their true hopes and fears. While their journey is filled with plenty of humor and sexy romance, there is also an unexpected depth of emotion as traumatic events from Nikki?s past are finally faced and unexpected revelations from a surprising source could forever change life as she knows it. There are secondary characters and plots aplenty intricately woven into Jay and Nikki?s story but Ridgway has crafted them in such a way that I never felt distracted from the main storyline or that their stories were superfluous. I thoroughly enjoyed 'How to Knit a Wild Bikini' and I?ll definitely be looking forward to the next two books in this series.

May 07, 2008: In Southern California, her knee injury forces sous chef Nikki Carmichael to leave her job that requires standing up on her feet all day. Thanks to a friend and an ad throughout the Los Angeles area she feels fortunate to obtain work as private chef to NYFM hip men?s magazine editor Jay Buchanan although he wants a lesbian so they have no sexual issues between them while he practices abstinence over the next year.----------- Nikki is unaware that Jay hired her not for her cooking skills, but to use as a fake girlfriend to keep females like his neighbor Shanna way from him. She learns his extra requirements when he kisses her in front of Shanna. However, Shanna is beginning to look away from the editing hunk to her landscaper Jorge while Jay's seventeen years old niece is attracted to an older teen. Nikki seems to be in the middle of all these relationships including her own with her new employer, which drives her to Malibu & Ewe for a stitch of sanity.--------------- This Malibu & Ewe contemporary romance is an engaging tale especially when the focus is on the lead couple. However, there are several other relationship sidebar subplots forging, even beyond the two mentioned above, so at times the plot feels overwhelmed with too many knitters. Still Jay is a fascinating character who suddenly has a tendency to need to spend time in the kitchen whereas Nikki proves from that first kiss she does not meet his job requirement. HOW TO KNIT A WILD BIKINI is a fun Southern California romance.----------- Harriet Klausner
