      Synopsis

Harry keeps a horse in his room. A trusty horse only he can see. But then his parents take him to the country to see "real" horses. Horses that are free to run, kick, and nibble. Now Harry must decide: Does his horse need to be free, too?

      Annotation

Although no one else can see it, Harry is very pleased to have a horse in his room.

      Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

Harry has a wonderful pal. It is a horse that lives in his room, but one that no one else can see. He is a very skilled horseman because they ride around the room and never break or topple anything. At night, Harry's horse watches over him, and when he comes home from school, his pal is waiting. One weekend Harry's parents decide to take him out to see real horses and on the way back they remark that horses should be free. Once home, Harry races to his room and tells his horse that he is free to go. Happily for Harry, his horse decides to stay and Harry knows they will be together for as long as Harry wishes. A really delightful story of the power of imagination and friendship. The illustrations by Hoff, with just a simple outline of the horse, are wonderful—they show clearly that the horse is real only to Harry. "An I Can Read Book." 2002 (orig. 1970), HarperCollins,

October 04, 2009: My son really progressed by reading this book! He was able to sound out basic words and that helped him to be confident to move onto another book! He still reads it at bedtime to me.
