In this “sweet, funny, true tale of same-sex romance” (PUBLISHERS WEEKLY), David Valdes Greenwood sets the record straight on gay marriage-and reminds us what really matters to any couple. Here he charts the ups and downs of an all-too-human relationship: going on that first “non-date”; learning to share duties (and mince words) in the kitchen; dealing with a wandering eye; and realizing that life as a couple is all about discovering “just how many things you can approach differently without actually killing each other.” When along comes baby, David and his husband find out just how outrageous and maddeningly wonderful the ties of love can be. This is a radiant, whimsical testament to love and commitment by today’s “gay Erma Bombeck” (NPR).

This is an endearing, humorous, honest account of a marriage between the writer and his husband. Author David Valdes Greenwood is an exceptional storyteller who relates his tale of a loving relationship from the first blossoms of love to the usual trials and tribulations we all face in long-term relationships....If you want to read a magical, funny tale of real people facing life together and searching for happiness, you must read this book.
Not only the tale of a grounded same-sex marriage, but...the lives of two amazingly devoted parents.
Greenwood is a born storyteller, and the story he tells is one you'll be delighted to hear.
The Valdes Greenwoods (a.k.a. the VGs) are a fairly ordinary family. They met in graduate school, married a few years later, bought a house and a dog, and adopted a child. But in this relationship memoir, Valdes Greenwood also writes of the fun he and his husband have checking out other guys together and the conscious choice each made to speak of his "husband" instead of his "spouse." Neither a sob story of discrimination nor an obvious effort to influence readers to accept gay marriage, this is merely an endearing story about a committed gay couple. Greenwood's humorous, honest, and personal voice makes him a great tour guide and friend through this look into his private life. However, he doesn't present his husband's personality as lucidly; the reader can develop a relationship with only one of the two main players. The couple's homosexuality provides just enough to make this a unique relationship tell-all, but the hook is not overused (save in the title). For larger public libraries.
At last - a memoir of a life worth living!. . . This is a frank, funny book about the fragile finances and tender hearts on which we stake our happiness." -- (Michael Downing, author of Breakfast with Scot)
