    Synopsis

Effective, safe, affordable, and free of chemical side effects-the benefits of homeopathy are endless! Already established in the national health care systems of England, France, and the Netherlands, homeopathic treatments are used by over 500 million people worldwide. Alan Schmukler's Homeopathy discusses the history and science of this alternative medicine and provides a comprehensive list of proven remedies-safe for people and animals.

Packed with homeopathic treatments for arthritis, colds, food poisoning, insomnia, Lyme disease, morning sickness, wounds, and a host of other ailments and injuries, this handy reference guide also includes information on homeopathic immunization and first aid. Schmukler gives helpful instructions for matching remedies with symptoms, ingesting them correctly, making remedies at home, and stretching your supply.

    Library Journal

Schmukler (founder, Homeopathic Study Group of Metropolitan Philadelphia) presents essential background information on homeopathy e.g., history, methodology but emphasizes the application of homeopathic remedies to such emergency situations as epidemics, natural disasters, terrorism, antibiotic resistance, and acute conditions of chronic diseases. His alphabetical listings include not just common afflictions but severe conditions like ebola, gangrene, pain from amputation, hanta virus, and anthrax. Homeopathy, Schmukler offers, can provide a first line of defense where conventional medical help is unavailable or ineffective. His book concludes with sections on pregnancy/birth, occupation-related remedies, and other resources (e.g., homeopathic doctors, organizations, web sites). Though Schmukler worked as a respiratory therapist in an emergency room setting, he does not cite any formal homeopathic education or credentials. Also, some of the occupation-specific conditions he aims to remedy seem a little far-fetched (pilots loss of cabin pressure; bartenders gunshot wounds; astronauts reduced-oxygen environments; sales suppressed anger from frustration). There are many good books introducing homeopathy to lay readers, among them Edward Shalts's The American Institute of Homeopathy Handbook for Parents. While Schmukler's book may be a useful addition to specialized collections, it is not recommended for most public libraries. Andy Wickens, King Cty. Lib. February 08, 2007: I have purchased many homeopathic and herbal books, but this book was the simplest to understand. The author gives great tips on how to figure out which remedy to choose.

July 05, 2006: As a nutritionist working in a hospital, I encounter on a daily basis the ill effects and the threats from use/abuse of conventional medicine and medications. I look forward for the day where conventional medicine will incorporate alternative medicine and homeopathy in its practice... Never had I understood the concept of homeopathy so well until I read this book. It's very easy to understand and to make use of in every-day life situations. This is a practical book that will be usefull to most people and will generate interest and accumulate good feedback (I disagree with the critic's opinion - it should be recommended to most public libraries).
