This is practical workbook for patients and health care professionals. Hives (urticaria) and swelling (angioedema) affect approximately 50 to 60 million individuals in the U.S. at least once in their lifetime.
A primary purpose of this book is to improve the evaluation and treatment of hives and swelling with an approach that encourages collaboration between patients and health care professionals. March 03, 2004: I once heard someone say that a person they didn?t like brought them out in hives. Funny huh? But actually, the truth is that hives are far from funny and cause misery to many. Most people believe that hives is nothing more than an allergic rash which vanishes as quickly as it arrives but symptoms differ from person to person, they can last for hours, days, weeks, months and years. For some there are periods of remission but afterwards the hives return again. Because of the nature of the condition it is difficult to treat and doctors tend to prescribe medication that masks the visible symptoms. rather than trying to treat the underlying condition. This can lead to frustration and depression for the patient. This book is gem. It offers practical help and hope for a cure. Written by a doctor, who has also experienced hives, it is part textbook and part workbook which patients can work through. It encourages patient and doctor to work together and allows the patient an opportunity to have a proactive approach in their treatment. I could not recommend this book more highly. It is informative and accessible to all who should try to read it. Alan Wanderer has done a wonderful thing here by remembering that at the source of every medical complaint is a real person who wants to be well. Other doctors could learn much from this man. Thank you Alan.
