This is the third edition of a basic text/atlas in a core discipline in all medical/dental first year curricula as well as some undergraduate curricula. The second edition was published in 1989. The book is intended for beginning students of histology; this new edition incorporates certain modifications intended to encourage students to approach the subject matter in a more independent way. These are worthwhile goals, and the text accomplishes them admirably. The primary audience for the book is the beginning student of histology. It would also be a useful reference source for more advanced medical students and any practicing physician who may need or wish to be apprised of current histological information. The authors are recognized experts in the field. Illustrations are absolutely central to such a text/atlas, and this text has a large number of very high quality tables, diagrams, and exceptional light micrographs and electron micrographs. The table of contents and especially the index are thorough. As a basic text there are no references to other texts or the primary literature, an acceptable practice for a basic textbook. The text uses boxed-in areas for material of special or more advanced interest. Also, the layout changes in the pages facing the atlas plates are a useful and significant improvement; the layout makes it easier to relate to the figure being described. The only drawback is the soft cover which, makes the book less durable. This is an excellent up-to-date text/atlas of histology. Libraries and bookstores should stock this book; students should own their own copy. The new edition contains much new information and many new figures. The writing style andreadability are significantly improved from the earlier very good second edition. The book is well worth having.

Description: This is the fourth edition of this histology textbook. The previous edition was published in 1995.
Purpose: This is a complete textbook of histology in which the end of each chapter has a comprehensive atlas with accompanying thorough descriptions of the plates on the facing pages. This is a proven and effective approach to a book of this type and the authors have admirably achieved their objectives.
Audience: This book is a primary source for students in medical or dental schools who are taking histology; it is also a useful textbook for many undergraduate courses or students in the allied health professions. The authors are experts in the field having a long track record publishing texts and atlases of histology.
Features: This book has the same general appearance as the earlier editions, but it contains a number of significant enhancements. Most of the drawings have been improved and now use a consistent color for the same organelles throughout the text. Many of the light micrographs have been replaced with higher quality images; the atlas portion no longer has any black-and-white light micrographs; the explanatory text on the pages facing the atlas micrographs has been improved and made even more useful. The cell biology content (in the introductory chapters and elsewhere in the book) has been expanded and made current with respect to content and by the use of many excellent new diagrams. The book has a very thorough and useable index. There is only one minor feature omitted from this edition — the previous edition used color boxes printed at the edge of the page of the atlas portions of every chapter. This was a great convenience in locating these pages; the current edition omits this small but useful feature.
Assessment: The new edition of this book has maintained the same standards of excellence of its predecessors and maintains its position as the best of a large number of histology textbooks currently on the market. The quality of the writing is excellent; the amount of useful and accurate information is maximized while being presented concisely and clearly. Professor Ross and his colleagues have continued to make this book a strong resource of factual, authoritative information combined with a true atlas that serves the needs of students working in the histology laboratory with slides and microscopes. The new features and updated content make the fourth edition a long awaited and welcome arrival.

An histology text noteworthy for its unusually large selection of photomicrographs. This substantially revised edition (second was 1989) features updated information on cell and molecular biology, more color photomicrographs with improved correlation to the text, and increased emphasis on concepts that relate structure to function.
