      Synopsis

Featuring an audio CD with 45 minute of original, educational, and cutting-edge music, this latest entry in the innovative Flocabulary series turns U.S. history—from pre-Colonial days through World War II—into an enjoyable experience.  No more yawning through lists of dull, dry dates: this effective and engaging combination of rhythm and rhyme makes remembering the basic curriculum as easy as apple pie.  The topics range from the first meeting between the Native Americans and the European explorers to the Seeds of Revolution (“Taxin’ and Representin’”), from Lincoln and the Civil War to the Industrial Revolution, from the Great Depression to Bombs Over Berlin.  It’s perfect for any student preparing for the AP placement test or the SAT II.

      Children's Literature

History can be one of the most difficult subjects to teach children. The world has changed so much in the last hundred years that children can find it difficult to relate to figures long dead and who have no impact on their daily lives save for a brief mention in a history text. It takes a very creative instructor to create a curriculum that will make history interesting to all students and that will generate enough of an interest that children will wish to learn more and retain that knowledge. Harrison and Rappaport have written fourteen hip hop songs combining important facts in American History with popular culture. The songs are quite clever and will appeal to fans of hip hop of any age. However, it will take a very clever teacher to adapt the songs to classroom use. The lyrics are printed side-by-side with additional information about concepts and phrases used in the songs. An introduction to each song with a brief overview of the period featured begins each chapter. Several appendices are included that provide additional information on important figures and events featured in the songs.
