A memoir of the irrepressible Herb Brooks, impresario of U. S. hockey’s 1980 “Miracle on Ice,” by a longtime sportswriter and confidant.
The book fans of Herb Brooks waited nearly 30 years for has finally reached bookstores . . . This book reminds us how much everyone in the hockey world misses Brooks, who died in a car accident on Aug. 11, 2003, on his way home from a hockey fundraising golf event on the Iron Range.

John Gilbert has been around sports his entire life. The son of the late Wally Gilbert, Duluth's greatest athlete (Brooklyn Dodgers, Duluth Eskimos, pre-NBA pro basketball, and Duluth curling), he has written about hockey at all levels. A former Minneapolis Star Tribune writer, Gilbert now reports for various magazines and radio stations. He continues to play amateur baseball in his attempt to avoid reaching retirement age.

February 07, 2009: This book was great! It was hard to put down. It took me back to my days of Gopher hockey at the old Williams Arena. Nothing can compare to those days! Also the coverage of the 1980 Gold medal was the best I have read.

November 29, 2008:
A flawlessly written book, by the very knowledgeable Minneapolis Tribune beat writer who covered the 1980 Olympic hockey team throughout that magical year when it was based in the Twin Cities for training.
Mr Gilbert was able to write from the perspective of being rinkside when the entire event was occurring. Mr Gilbert maintained a relationship with Herb Brooks based upon a deep mutual respect for many insights not available to others.
This book will allow readers to separate the many legends created by the "artistic licenses" in the movie Miracle and other sources less thorough than Mr Gilbert's background information.
I highly recommend the fantastic book, it is by far the best book I have read about the 1980 Olympic hockey team and Herb Brooks. It is accurate, complete, and well-written.
