      Synopsis

Wed to a wealthy older man when she was just a girl, Lahsin Yew runs away from her abusive home to find a new life. At seventeen, she's about to enter her Second Passage, when her Flair—and perhaps her HeartMate—will be revealed.

Lahsin finds sanctuary in a secret garden, where she meets Tinne Holly. Though he is her HeartMate, he cannot tell her, and her troubled past prevents her from trusting any man. Pretending to find her by chance, Tinne helps her through her Second Passage. But when the truth is revealed, can she forgive his deception, and learn to trust in her destiny?

      Publishers Weekly

Owens's latest entry in the Heart series (Heart Dance, etc.) is a touching tale of learning to trust again. Lahsin Burdock Yew is an underage noblewoman being abused by her brutish husband. When she comes of age, she repudiates her marriage and flees to a sanctuary where she can go through her Second Passage, a difficult and sometimes deadly ritual that will cause her magical Flair to be revealed. Meanwhile, nobleman Tinne Holly is recovering from a scandal: his wife has divorced him, making it the first divorce in noble history. Tinne knows that Lahsin is his Heartmate (his soul mate), but he is forbidden by law from telling her. Instead he goes to the sanctuary to heal his own broken heart and try to protect Lahsin from her Passage and help tend to her emotional wounds. But as they grow closer, the specter of Lahsin's ex-husband looms, threatening her freedom and their happiness. Even for readers unfamiliar with the Heartworld, Owens makes it easily accessible and full of delightful conceits such the Residences, houses with consciousnesses and personalities. (Sept.)

This One Had My Heartby SamWyoming

August 15, 2009: One of my favorites in the Heart series. It explores the delicate nature of love between HeartMates when both are suffering, one from loss, another from abuse. Of all the books in the series, this one delves the most deeply into the fragile emotions of the participants, doing an excellent job with how true love can involve selflessly letting go and allowing the other to grow and if need be, to become independent. A page-turner, not only with the action scenes, but with the emotional turmoil taking place. This one had my heart.

I Also Recommend: Protector of the Flight, Heart Quest, White Night (Dresden Files Series #9).

August 28, 2008: In Druida City Lahsin Yew and Tinne Holly belong together, but both know that will not happen. When she was fourteen years old, she was forced to marry an abusive older GrandLord T?Yew Tinne knowing he cannot wed his heartmate marries Genista.------------- However, to his shock and that of the nobility as there is no precedent, Genista is going to divorce Tinne. Three years into her marriage from hell, Lashin is entering her second Flair passage that will proclaim her as an adult that is if she lives. She plans to divorce her odious mate, but first hides from him knowing he will kill her before she completes the passage. Tinne risks what is left of his reputation by vowing to keep his heartmate safe though he fears once she survives passage she will be upset to learn he is her heartmate.------------- Although somewhat similar in tone to the previous Heart tale, the tangled relationships of the heartmates to others make for a much deeper compassionate and fresh entry. Readers will feel for the star crossed heartmates but fate in terms of her dictatorial father and her abusive husband make their mating impossible. Although T-Yew has no seemingly redeeming qualities, Robin D. Owens provides a suburb romantic fantasy filled with heart.--------------- Harriet Klausner
