Synopsis

This classic book, written 17 years ago but still selling more than 13,000 copies every year, has been completely updated and expanded by the author.

"I used to drink," writes John Bradshaw,"to solve the problems caused by drinking. The more I drank to relieve my shame-based loneliness and hurt, the more I felt ashamed."

Shame is the motivator behind our toxic behaviors: the compulsion, co-dependency, addiction and drive to superachieve that breaks down the family and destroys personal lives. This book has helped millions identify their personal shame, understand the underlying reasons for it, address these root causes and release themselves from the shame that binds them to their past failures.

April 01, 2009: This book is both informative and, for it's time, innovative. Bradshaw makes relevant the past traumatic events in one's life which has lead to the crippling hold Shame has over them. A great source/resource for anyone who is or has anyone in their life being held back by self-shaming actions.

I Also Recommend: I Never Told Anyone, Courage to Heal, I Hate You, Don't Leave Me, Borderline Personality Disorder Demystified, Stop Walking on Eggshells.

March 17, 2009: John Bradshaw's book on Healing The Shame is masterfully written and is composed of two parts. The first part lays the foundation for what is toxic shame and why we might have it. The second part is chuck full of exercises to alleviate the shame we carry. John used personal experiences to support his contentions. I found his book extremely beneficial in understanding the shame I acquired in childhood.
