These volumes are an excellent compilation of the literature available in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery today. I can find no major flaws. I congratulate Dr Bailey, his division and section editors, and the contributors for their achievement.

This is a comprehensive textbook of head and neck surgery-otolaryngology. The editors cover the core knowledge of this specialty in two volumes of over 2000 pages. Each chapter concludes with a summary of highlights, facilitating the use of this text as a systematic learning system. A companion book also includes questions as a study guide for each chapter. This is the second edition of the book, with the first edition published in 1993. The intention is to provide a current and comprehensive text in a readable format that can be used as a learning system. The chapters are organized in a uniform manner. Intended as a systematic learning system, its uniform structure and consistent use of tables and high-quality illustrations makes it an essential choice for otolaryngology residents. Many practitioners will alsobenefit from this current review of the specialty. The overall quality of the text is first rate. This second edition contains significant improvements and should be included in collections at medical school and otolaryngology department libraries.

Purpose:This standard is one of the must read textbooks for any otolaryngology resident. The purpose is to present a concise, yet complete review of the specialty. This is a needed textbook and the editors and authors have done a great job in accomplishing their objectives.
Audience:This is primarily for residents and practitioners in otolaryngology. It could be used as a reference for other specialists who encounter a patient or situation that involves an otolaryngologic diagnosis. This book is edited and written by the foremost authorities in the specialty.
Features:The two-volume book is divided into 11 sections covering all subspecialties within otolaryngology. An exhaustive section covers basic science and general medicine. Sections also cover ethics, medical eponyms, business aspects, and alternative medicine as it relates to otolaryngology. This book does a great job in covering all of the core competencies for otolaryngology training. Each chapter has a text block at the end with highlights from that chapter. The references are up to date and the illustrations are of high quality.
Assessment:This is a first rate core textbook for the otolaryngologist and is considered one of the standard textbooks in the field. It has been appropriately updated and is a justified new edition.
