Synopsis

DERIVED FROM THE CONTENT OF HARRISON'S PRINCIPLES OF INTERNAL MEDICINE, 16th Edition

The entire content of the Endocrinology and Metabolism section of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 16e -- complete with review questions, new algorithms and diagrams, and clinical photographs -- edited by a team of the world's most respected physicians.

Reviewer: Rebecca L Brown, MD(University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This is a thorough review of major topics in endocrinology, encompassing many "bread and butter" aspects of the field including pituitary, thyroid, and bone diseases as well as diabetes, obesity, and endocrine tumors. Reproductive endocrinology is also addressed.
Purpose: The purpose is to bring information to readers in a compact and usable form compared to the parent text (Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine). This is indeed a worthy objective. This book allows for more detail on endocrine disease and for integration of pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and general treatment options.
Audience: This is an excellent overview of endocrine disease for students, residents, or fellows with a particular interest in endocrinology. It is also suitable for general internists who would like to hone their knowledge in endocrinology. The author writes that the book is intended for both students of medicine and practicing physicians, an appropriate audience.
Features: All major topics in endocrinology are covered. Three excellent features distinguish this book. First, it is far more readable than many review books and the well done illustrations add to the written text. Second, after the description of different endocrine diseases, the authors provide a blue box containing up-to-date overviews of treatment for the particular disease. Third, for those who would like to read more, each section has current references for studies/articles that have influenced the understanding/treatment of the topic.
Assessment: This is an excellent book. It is useful as a reference (to look up a specific question) or as a review (to hone one's knowledge in endocrinology). The chapters are concise and readable and the references are current. There is also a useful self-assessment Q&A section.
